![]() ![]() La famille Tollé de Nancy (puis Donnelay et Albestroff ): Some Noble, Knight, and Gentilshommes ancestors. Johan Stravius was stationed in the conquered duchy in territory controlled by France. Stravius’s father (probably from the Strasbourg branch of the military Stravius family) was a captain of combined German and Swedish forces in the service of France during the Thirty Years War in its campaign against the duchy of Lorraine. Jean Guillaume Stravius, Captain of the 2nd infantry regiment of Lorraine du Royaume de France created in 1684, served his last major campaign in the Netherlands under the command of Prince Albert-Octave T’serclaes de Tilly, comte du Saint Empire, in the War of the Spanish Succession. In addition to these immigrants to Lorraine, the majority of my ancestry here were native Lorrainers, some centered around French-speaking Nancy and others in Franconian-speaking Moselle. Other ancestors who relocated in the Moselle region of Lorraine include Mathieu Clav é from Puy-de-Dome, Auvergne, and Christophe Desmaret from Oise, Picardy, both also around 1660. My direct paternal line were immigrants around 1660 from northern Switzerland. Much of the land was decimated by allied French Catholic and Swedish Protestant forces, and a large percentage of the population were killed or died of disease and famine. Lorraine became a melting pot following the Thirty Years War. My Earliest Ancestors in the Duchy of Lorraine – Ma généalogie en Moselle, et en Meurthe-et-Moselle, en Lorraine. The town was known first as “ Frantsila” (1598), named for the first settler, a wealthy farmer and sheriff named Frans Eerikinpoika.ĭescendants of this line of my maternal grandmother include several tolfman or lautamies (lay justices). Rantsila, in the Oulu region much further north and west on the Gulf of Bothnia, was first settled in the mid-1500s by Finnish settlers under the encouragement of King Gustav Vasa of Sweden in return for several years of tax-exempt status. Mt-DNA: Once promoted as Proto-Sámi, my mtDNA haplotype now places my maternal line in a very small Finnish proposed subclade (there are only six of us!) centered near Savo in southeastern Finland. ![]() The duchy of Lorraine, devastated by the Thirty Years War, became a melting pot of settlers repopulating the region, not yet a province of France, drawing immigrants from Tyrol (Austria), Switzerland, Picardy, Savoy, and other French and Germanic regions.īrita Johansdotter (Pritta Juhontÿtar), wife of Isaak Kårkala It has not as yet been possible to pinpoint the specific Celtic tribe where my paternal DNA orginated, although the Raurici or the Helvetii, or a mixture thereof, mentioned by Julius Caesar, is probable.
